Profs and Pints Denver Takes on Accents 9/16/26
Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones Diary. Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. These are classic examples of actors learning and using accents that are far from their native way of speaking.
How do they learn to speak in different accents?
The professor for this night is Miranda Guettlein, a linguist who serves as editor-in-chief of the only academic journal dedicated to voice and speech training for performance and has provided accent coaching to actors in many beloved plays. She'll offer an overview of how different parts of the mouth and throat come into play in creating accents, and she'll show you that how you say something can provide as much meaning as what you say.
