When we think of World War II, many of us picture scenes from movies—Americans portrayed as an uncomplicated force for good, moral lines drawn in bright, bold strokes. Yet real experiences of the war, both overseas and at home, were far more layered than most films suggest.
Profs and Pints is setting aside the Hollywood script for a Veterans Day talk at Woody Fisher Kitchen and Bar. Your guide for the evening is Joshua Madrid, associate director of Regis University’s Center for the Study of War Experience, a project that gathers oral histories from people whose lives were shaped by war to better understand its human cost.
Madrid will explore how World War II intersected with fierce debates over American identity and belonging, and how many of those who served or supported the war effort did so while facing discrimination in their own communities. He’ll also look at how the conflict helped reshape the United States as dramatically as it did much of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Come for a relaxed, thoughtful evening that looks past the familiar World War II narrative and listens more closely to the people who actually lived it.
